2019: Black Coffee

Black Coffee was formed in April 2017 after drummer Tommy McCullough, introduced singer and bassist Ehab Omran, to guitarist Justin Young. Within the first few days, the three were songwriting, booking, and developing chemistry unlike any other. In late 2018 the band became finalized when Nick Fratianne took over bass duties, which allowed Ehab to be the true showman that he is. Black Coffee combines superb musicianship with a high-energy performance that is refreshingly both vintage and ground-breaking. This four-piece collaboration takes inspiration from classic rock bands of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, and fuses it with the root music of blues and rock n’ roll from the 40’s and 50’s. Dedicated to re-inventing modern rock music; Black Coffee parts the proverbial sea for the next generation of artists.

UPDATE: In 2019 Black Coffee was signed to a major record label and officially announced the band’s new name as “South of Eden” on December 14, 2019. Follow South of Eden on Facebook and by visiting their website.

2018: Red Light Go

In early 2015, after years of playing in numerous successful bands in Ohio, guitarist Shannon Smith felt the calling once again to the altar of rock and roll. It was then he decided to build the ultimate rocking party band and was determined to find just the right member to fill each position, starting with the singer. Shannon knew that the vocalist not only had to be a great front man with the voice of an angel, but he also had to be charismatic, charming, personable, a little overweight, but still be easy on the eyes. Immediately he thought of Mike Skite.

Skite had played in some great Ohio bands. One particular stand-out show was a double-bill featuring Mike Skite’s MOTHER TRUCKER and Shannon Smith’s ONE7ONE. Once Skite saw Shannon’s perfectly styled hair and heard the magic coming out of his Gibson Les Paul, the two met and became fast friends. Over the years they stayed in touch through their love of rock music and abstract finger painting.

The next thing the the two rockers needed was a kick-ass drummer. They pondered for a while until Skite remembered the legend of a drummer from far-away on the west side of Columbus from the band LEVELED. It was said this drummer could play with both complete precision and reckless abandon and that he sometimes played so hard and fast that drumsticks would fly right out of his hands, as far as the eye could see. The legend also spoke of this drummer being adorable and kind, yet easy to get along with and on time.

“Surely, this can’t be true!” exclaimed Skite.

“Oh, but it is!” said Shannon. “I know of this drummer you speak of and his name is David Ziglar.”

Once Zig, as he liked to be called, was united with Shannon and Skite, the magic started to happen. However, there was one more essential piece to the puzzle. After all, what was the point of having a fabulous drummer without a fantastic bass player? The search was on for a dashing, energetic and thunderous bassist. Zig suggested that it would be nice if the bass man also resembled Jesus, only slightly dirtier. Shannon and Skite agreed.

Shannon claimed to have the perfect guy in mind; an old bandmate of his from the band CHILLIN SUN, fronted by the late, renowned Kenny Kanowski. They contacted Robert Durosko who agreed to meet them at 6:30 that night.

Well, 6:30 came and went. Just then, rolling up to the rehearsal space at 7:15, Bob emerged through a fine mist of fog on his Harley-Davidson, bass guitar strapped to his back. He was pulling a trailer with an Ampeg bass cabinet on it and his long, manly hair blowing in the breeze. It was a majestic sight to say the least!

It only took playing one song together for the guys to know that this was it; the perfect combination to create the world’s greatest rocking party band. On that day in April of 2015, RED LIGHT GO was born.

2016: Jackass Genius

Meet Jackass Genius. The band started out as a church band. That bears repeating: a CHURCH band. These experienced local musicians assembled for the purpose of mass the first Saturday of every month. It was only after a pilgrimage to Graceland that the boys were visited by the spirit of Elvis Presley who blessed their endeavors and declared unto them to return to the stage. The king works in mysterious ways, and now every performance is a classic rock sermon with the church of rock and roll.

Jackass Genius was the well-deserved winner of the 2016 Qfm96 Torg & Elliott House Band Contest. The band consists of four members who are all respected musicians and have each been a part of the Columbus local rock scene for more than 20 years. Become a part of the Jackass Nation by seeing them live at one of their upcoming events listed below, follow them on social media, or book them for one of your upcoming events.
