3 dead in separate incidents

COLUMBUS – Three people died in Columbus over the weekend, including a man beaten to death in a street brawl involving teens and their family members and a man gunned down in a restaurant parking lot.

Anyone with information regarding these incidents is asked to call the Columbus Police Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-TIPS.

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on a murder charge after allegedly beating a 53-year-old man during a brawl that started with a fight involving teen girls, Sgt. Jeff Strayer of the homicide unit said.

Homer Wright, Jr., and his 79-year-old father, Homer Wright, Sr., got involved in the fight involving the girls, one of whom was a relative, Friday night and were allegedly assaulted by Tyler Canny, Strayer said.

Officers found the younger Wright lying in the street in the 1000 block of Rumsey Road suffering from severe head injuries. Strayer says he died Saturday at Grant Medical Center.

Homer Wright, Sr., 79, also suffered severe head trauma during the fight but was expected to survive, Strayer said.

Canny has been charged with murder and a felonious assault charge is pending.

Detectives are still looking for suspects in two separate shooting incidents which left two men dead and a third in the hospital.

Strayer says Anthony Baldwin and Nathan Berry, both 21, were shot in the area of 1447 Oakwood Avenue at approximately 5:13 p.m. Saturday during what appears to have been a robbery and were driven to Grant Medical Center by a bystander.

Baldwin died later while Strayer says Berry is in stable condition and is expected to survive.

Police have no suspects in the case, which remains under investigation.

Detectives are looking for a gold four-door vehicle in connection with the shooting death of a man in the parking lot of the Waffle House restaurant at 1405 N. Cassady Avenue early Monday morning, Strayer said.

Corey La-Paul Brown, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene, the 29th homicide victim of 2017 in Columbus, Strayer said.

Witnesses told investigators they saw the suspect vehicle leave the scene before officers arrived, Strayer said.
