“Chittfest” block party turns to mayhem

COLUMBUS – Columbus police are looking for people they say committed a variety of crimes, like vandalism, criminal damaging and criminal mischief, when a block party near the OSU campus turned into a riot Saturday night.

They are asking anyone with information to contact Central Ohio Crime Stoppers: Twitter @OhioCrime or 614-461-TIPS (8477)

About 1,000 people reportedly attended “Chittfest” on Chittenden Avenue and many went on a rampage of property destruction, including damaging more than a half-dozen vehicles, according to police and media reports.

“During the course of the party in the off-campus housing area, many people participated in illegal activities that included vandalism, criminal damaging and criminal mischief. If you were at Chittfest or know of anyone who participated in these crimes (examples: property destruction, fires, or any other conduct that was inappropriate), we are asking for your help.” -Columbus Division of Police statement

The behavior prompted a scolding tweet from university president Dr. Kristina Johnson.

“Last night’s behavior and destruction of property just off campus are unacceptable, and for our students who were involved, this does not represent who we are as Buckeyes,” she wrote Sunday.
