COLUMBUS – Ohio was one of several states that reported mass shooting incidents over the weekend.
The victims included a 16-year-old girl who was killed in a shooting at Bicentennial Park in downtown Columbus that left seven other people hurt, five of them with gunshot wounds, and three people killed at a Youngstown bar.
The death of the teenager was one of three fatal shootings in the city that brought the total number of homicides in 2021 in Columbus to 78.
Columbus police said a private event promoted on social media was being held in Bicentennial Park when the gunfire began shortly before midnight Saturday.
Olivia Kurtz, 16, died shortly after 1:00 a.m. Sunday at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, Sgt. David Shimberg of the Columbus Homicide Unit said.
A 16-year-old boy, a 15-year-old girl, two 19-year-old women and a 19-year-old man were expected to recover from gunshots wounds they received, Shimberg said.
Two other victims sustained minor injuries as they fled. No arrests were immediately announced.
A man was under arrest Sunday in connection with the city’s latest homicide, the fatal shooting of a 38-year-old man found inside a vehicle patrol officers were following at a high rate of speed that stopped at Mount Carmel – Franklinton just before 2:00 a.m. Sunday.
As they were pulling up to the emergency entrance, Shimberg says several individuals exited the vehicle, where the officers discovered Carl Carroll in the vehicle.
Carroll was taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center where he died at 4:22am.
Investigators are still not sure of the exact location of this shooting is unknown but Shimberg says police charged Isaiah Powers with murder.
The incident is still under investigation.
Police have still not released the name of a 29-year-old man who died at Riverside Methodist Hospital Friday afternoon after being shot in the parking lot outside the Columbus Square Bowling Palace on the Northeast Side, according to Sgt. Eric Pilya of the Homicide Unit.
Witnesses told police two men pulled up in a gold Ford Explorer and opened fire before driving away, Pilya said.
Five other people were injured in shooting incidents in Columbus:
- a man was shot twice shortly after he was picked up and given a ride on the East Side at about 2:25 a.m. Monday. The driver of the car told police someone fired at the vehicle shortly after Jordan Hill got inside. Hill was listed in stable condition at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center.
- a 14-year-old boy was being treated at Nationwide Children’s Hospital for an arm injury after being shot inside ana apartment at 793 Canonby Place early Saturday morning. Police found 38 shell casings near the scene, Sgt. Doug Jones said.
- a 33-year-old man told police he was shot just after 8:30 p.m. Saturday by the manager of the Rally’s restaurant at 1340 W. Mound Street and another man as he was driving away from the restaurant with his girlfriend and her son. River Harrison-Muncy, the restaurant manager, was charged with felonious assault, Jones said.
- a DoorDash driver picking up an order at the McDonald’s at 3005 E. Livingston Avenue was shot when a group of teens rode into the lot on dirt bikes and opened fire, Jones said.
- a couple was not hit when a man fired a handgun at them during a confrontation outside Dave & Buster’s at 1515 Gemini Place just before 9;45 p.m. Friday, Jones said.
- a 34-year-old woman was recovering from a gunshot wound to the head after she says she suffered when someone fire multiple into at least two buildings near the intersection of W. Broad Street and Hayden Avenue early Friday morning.
At least three people were killed and three others were wounded in a shooting Sunday outside a bar in Youngstown.
Chief Carl Davis of the Youngstown police department said gunfire was reported shortly after 2:00 a.m. Sunday in the area of the Torch Club Bar & Grille in Youngstown.
None of the shootings occurred in the bar but Davis said “they stemmed from an incident which began there.”
No arrests were reported but police said they were talking to several people.
