Meijer facility in western Ohio hit by tornado

COLUMBUS – Authorities say a Meijer distribution center in western Ohio was heavily damaged as employees inside heeded tornado warnings and sought shelter.

UPDATE  6/9/22 3:43 p.m.: This article has been updated to include new information from the National Weather Service. 

Storms also caused damage but no injuries in Delaware and Fairfield counties in central Ohio.

Nobody was injured at the Meijer facility and there have been no reports of injuries from the EF2 twister, which touched down near West Milton and Tipp City between 5:55 and 6:15 Wednesday evening, according to Joel Smith, director of the Miami County Emergency Management Agency, and the National Weather Service, which confirmed the damage was the result of a tornado.

Smith said a few other buildings were hit in the county, but the storm’s severe damage mostly hit north of Tipp City’s residential areas.

It wasn’t immediately clear if there were injuries in other parts of the state.

The National Weather Service issued multiple tornado warnings in the area, as well as near Delaware, Sunbury and Galena in Delaware County, southeastern Pickaway County, northwestern Madison County and southwestern Union County in central Ohio.

The weather service reported trees were knocked down near Delaware and Lancaster.

The weather service  determined that EF1 tornadoes touched down damage in Clark and Darke Counties and an EF0 twister touched down in  Brown County.
