Ohio colleges dropping sports amid pandemic

COLUMBUS – Some college athletic departments are eliminating teams as they try to deal with the effects of revenue lost when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of spring sports and major events like the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

The University of Akron has announced it will drop men’s cross-country and golf and women’s tennis because of financial constraints.

Bowling Green State University, another member of the Mid-American Conference, has dropped baseball and says it’s reducing its athletic budget by $2 million.

Athletic director Bob Moosbrugger says the school will honor scholarship agreements through graduation and will assist student-athletes who want to transfer.
