Ohio teens arrested for carrying gun, posting about school shooting

COLUMBUS – In the wake of another deadly school shooting, two Ohio teens were arrested for incidents related to school violence.

Police say a 14-year-old student was spotted with a loaded handgun on a playground at a Dayton middle school.

Another 14-year-old student at a high school in Hamilton referenced the deadly Florida school shooting in a social media post.

Authorities say the teen with the weapon was looking through classroom windows at a Dayton school Wednesday afternoon when other students inside the building noticed a gun tucked into his waistband. One student yelled about the gun and others dove to the ground.

A school resource officer found the teen near the front of the school, patted him down and seized the gun.

Police say the teen is a half-day student and had already been dismissed from school before he returned with the gun.

The teen was arrested and charged with conveyance of a deadly weapon onto school grounds. He was on probation for a previous felony theft charge.

Ross Township police in southwestern Ohio say another teen was arrested early Thursday and charged with inducing panic, a second-degree felony, for referring to the Florida shooting in a post. They did not specify what the post said.

Ross High School Principal Brian Martin commended other students and community members who alerted the school to the post. The school has an increased police presence as a precaution.

Authorities say a former student opened fire Wednesday with a semi-automatic rifle at a high school in Parkland, Florida, killing 17 people.
