Police catch up with suspects in Whitehall slaying

WHITEHALL – Two men are behind bars, facing charges in connection with a deadly shooting in Whitehall early Monday.

Mario Wingate, 23, and Cameron Obey, 22, were arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a 22-year-old man who was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds just before 2:30 a.m. in the backyard of a home at 923 Colgate Road, Deputy Chief of Police Dan Kelso said.

“As of right now, we do not believe this is a random act of violence,” Kelso said and asked that nearby residents check home surveillance cameras for any unusual activity around the time of the murder.

Whitehall detectives and SWAT officers investigating the crime interviewed several witnesses and served nearly a dozen search warrants before arresting Wingate and Obey later on the same day as the incident, Kelso said.

Two firearms were recovered at the scene and Kelso says both men, who are currently in the Franklin County Jail, are believed to have pulled the triggers and are being charged with aggravated murder.
