COLUMBUS – Police are investigating whether the fatal shooting of a man on the Far East Side early Sunday was an act of self-defense.
Nathaniel Spears died just before 6:30 a.m. at a local hospital after officers found him lying in a grassy area in front of an apartment building in the 5000 block of Red Bird Court, Sgt. David Shimberg of the Columbus police Homicide Unit said.
The initial investigation indicates that Spears, 30, was involved in a fight with an unidentified suspect which led to the shooting.
Shimberg says detectives+ are investigating claims of self-defense and their findings will be turned over to a Franklin County grand jury for consideration.
This incident remains under investigation.
Police investigate suspicious death
Columbus homicide detectives are waiting for a coroner’s report to determine what caused the death of a man on the Hilltop Sunday, according to Sgt. Edward Powell III of the Homicide Unit.
The man, whose name was not released, was found in the 500 block of S. Hague Avenue at approximately 5:34 p.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene, Powell said.
This is an ongoing investigation.

Suspect arrested in Linden murder
34-year-old homeless man was behind bars Monday, accused of murdering another man in a Northeast Side home last month.
Detectives on Friday charged Paul Anthony Banks with murder in the fatal shooting of 60-year-old Ronald Price inside a home in the 2800 block of Atwood Terrace just before midnight on Jan. 32, according to Sgt. James Marable of the Columbus police Homicide Unit.
Banks was arrested the same day and is currently in the Franklin County Jail, Marable said.
