Police seek drivers who fled fatal crash scene

COLUMBUS – Police are looking for two drivers after they ran from the scene of a fatal multi-vehicle crash involving their cars on the East Side Monday night.

Investigators say a Dodge Charger and a Dodge Challenger were eastbound at high speeds on E. Broad Street near Brice Road at 9:32 p.m. when the Charger struck the rear of a Kia Sportage, sending both vehicles off the right side of the roadway where they came to rest in a ditch.

The Challenger lost control and caused a Lincoln Towncar, also eastbound, to run off the right side of the roadway toward Shadymere Lane where it became airborne and struck a Ford Mustang that was stopped at the intersection. The Towncar bounced off the Mustang and landed in a grassy yard in front of a townhome complex at 6645 E. Broad Street while the Challenger struck a utility pole on the southwest corner of the intersection.

The driver of the Towncar was pronounced dead at the scene by Whitehall paramedics and the driver of the Sportage was transported to Mt. Carmel East Hospital in serious condition, police said. The driver of the Mustang was transported to Mt. Carmel in stable condition.

The drivers of the Charger and the Challenger fled the crash scene on foot, the driver of the Charger grabbing two children out of the vehicle as they fled

Anyone with information of the driver of the Charger or Challenger is asked to contact the Columbus police Accident Investigation Unit at 614-645-5767 or CrimeStoppers of Central Ohio.
