COLUMBUS – Chris Williams hit a two-run tiebreaking single in the top of the fifth inning at Huntington Park Saturday night and the Saints went on to beat the Clippers, 7-3.
With the score tied at 2-2 and runners on second and third base, Thomas Ponticelli took over on the mound for Peyton Battenfield (0-4).
Williams was the first batter Ponticelli faced and the Saints first baseman lined a single to left field, driving in two runs before being tagged out trying to stretch the hit into a double.
Louie Varland (6-0) gave up three runs in the first 5 2/3 innings but the Clippers only managed to get three men on base the rest of the way.
Columbus has a chance to win the series Sunday afternoon.
