Police say Ali Mohamed and his brother, Mohamud, were arguing inside the elder Mohamed’s home on Caldwell Place in the city’s Mt. Vernon neighborhood at approximately 12:12 p.m. when the dispute escalated to the point where the younger brother threatened to harm Ali with a knife and Ali, who is a holder of a concealed-weapon permit, opened fire in self-defense, hitting his brother in the chest, homicide unit Sgt. Dave Sicilian said.

Officers and medics responding to the shooting found Mohamud Mohamed inside the apartment. He was taken to Grant Medical Center where he died just before 9:30 p.m., Sicilian said.
